  1. Develop a Strong Fundamental Skill Set

  1. Passing

This is usually the first skill involved after the opposing team serves the ball. Using the forearms together, you redirect the ball toward your team’s setter or target area. Proper form involves:

  • Bending knees and getting low, with arms straight out in front
  • Making a flat platform with your forearms by interlocking fingers
  • Contacting the ball with the fleshy part of the forearms, not the hands
  • Pushing through the ball to direct it to the target

    2. Setting

The setter runs the offense by putting the ball in an ideal position for an attacker to spike. Good setters:

  • Use overhead passing form with fingers spread and hands cupped together
  • Extend their arms fully when contacting the ball
  • Push the ball up and slightly forward to their hitters
  • Vary the height and speed of their sets to create better attacking opportunities

   3. Spiking (Attacking)

This is the most exciting and common way to score points. An effective spike involves:

  • Approaching the ball from an angle, taking a few steps before planting the foot opposite your hitting arm
  • Jumping off that planted foot, fully extending your body upwards
  • Swinging your hitting arm forward and making contact with the ball at its highest point
  • Following through by snapping your wrist over the top of the ball

   4. Blocking

Blocking is like spiking but on the defensive side at the net. Proper blocking techniques include:

  • Reading the opposing hitter and anticipating where they will attack
  • Jumping off both feet and fully extending your arms above and over the net
  • Keeping your hands spread wide and angled slightly towards the hitter
  • Penetrating over the net as far as rules allow when making the deflection

   5. Digging

When an opponent hits a spiked ball low over the net, you need to dig it up to keep the rally going. Keys for good digging include:

  • Getting low by bending at the knees and getting your shoulders square to the ball
  • Make a platform with your forearms like when passing
